Characters - (including traits, skills, dispositions, personal histories, etc.)

 • Mara: Driven, stubborn, ambitious, skilled with farm work and repairs. Very good at sailing. Adventurous.

 • Ken: Loves Mara, Kind, Good cook, Understanding, handy - skilled at repairs of almost anything

 • Mara's Mom and Dad: Worried, protective and loving. Don't understand Mara's motives. Don't want her to get on the Zephyr.

Locations - (include physical details, climate, general descriptions)
 • rural, far from cities and other towns
 • dry location, possibly a desert
 • other distant towns
Each location is separated by a manageable, but large, distance. This necessitates the use of Zephyrs, and a highway from the "time of plenty" for foot traffic. Large stores appear to be abandoned.

World Details:
Class system and roles:
-Children/ young adults expected to help with the family trade. In Mara's family it's farming.
-The time before the apocalypse is referred to as "the time of plenty".
-Family values reinforced
-Instead of the pursuit of betterment, success, or independence people are expected to stay and help maintain their families.

Climate: Dust storms

Economic system: Unknown if the America in this story still uses a currency or has regressed to a barter-based system. For smaller towns, the arrival of the trade ship Zephyr is a significant event: the ship carries goods that are ostensibly not normally available in these areas. Plastic has become a precious commodity due to the absence of traditional fossil fuels from the marketplace.

Educational system: Education is centered around vocations. With no organized schooling,

Factions: Merchant vessel with rigid command system

Gender roles:
It appears that gender roles have somewhat broken up due to the fall of the traditional system.A mother is still a Mother, but the story does not discuss whether or not this role means what it used to. Men seem to be dominant because they can just carry Mara away in the middle of a busy market.
Ken's place seems to be continuously in the kitchen. It is not explained whether cooking is his role, or whether this has to do with him being male. Ken also handles repairs at the home of Mara's parents; this may indicate that gender roles have been largely discarded, with tasks handled by whoever is most adept (i.e. Ken does the cooking because he's the better cook).

General culture (food, music, past times, art)
 • Activities and technology center around necessary survival. Farming, transportation, higher efficiency. Leisure areas are shown, but technology related to leisure activities is unexplored.
 • Vaccuums exist but they are seen as unnecessary. This could mean that vestiges of the past exsit, but what used to be deemed as necessities are now unimportant.

Healthcare:

History: Two generations ago, an unspecified conflict destroyed the Middle East and portions of Europe. This caused the petroleum-based infrastructure to collapse and started a long process to find and utilize alternative power sources. Small towns entered a minor Dark Age and still struggle to maintain a minimal standard of living.

Setting (city, country, space, mix): Countryside, small village
